Balm Dotcom Has Gone Back to Its Original Formula. Here’s My Honest Review

Perhaps this was the reason why they introduced a strawberry-flavoured variant, going back to the original formula in 2024, which, unfortunately, is not suitable for vegans. Later on, they discreetly reintroduced the original formula across all flavors in May 2024, somewhat flying under the radar to appease their loyal fans (while keeping the packaging they reportedly detested – quite puzzling!)

Exploring the Balm Dotcom Experience

Puzzled by the changes, I decided to try the Balm Dotcom (the revised version, now in a new packaging) to evaluate its performance. I questioned whether it effectively moisturized my lips and if the packaging truly irked the die-hard Glossier enthusiasts.

Would I be content with this product or opt for a similar offering from a different brand that provides additional benefits? Keep reading to uncover the answer.

Product Description

Glossier offers Balm Dotcom in a variety of flavors, including Rose, Mint, Mango, Original, Wild Fig, Lavender, Birthday, Coconut, and Strawberry. Additionally, the brand provides limited edition options such as Cookie Butter and Hot Cocoa.

The formula of Balm Dotcom is enriched with natural emollients and antioxidants like vitamin E, rosemary extracts, castor seed oil, lanolin, and beeswax to offer deep nourishment.

There have been discussions about a reformulated vegan version of the product being too thin in consistency, with some users noting separation on the lips. Despite this, the inclusion of beeswax and lanolin, while not completely cruelty-free, remains essential to provide a thicker texture and potentially enhanced moisturization.

First Impressions

At first glance, Glossier’s lip balm catches the eye. Initial thoughts suggested the packaging might not be appealing due to some consumer feedback.

While the classic formula remains unchanged, the new packaging has stirred some controversy. Opinions varied on the design, especially regarding the elongated cap for the innovative applicator.

As a beauty editor, the packaging critique seemed excessive since, in the end, it’s just a lip balm. The choice between the traditional versus slanted applicator style didn’t significantly impact my experience, though the latter seemed more practical.

Despite minor design considerations like the bold green cap on the Rose shade, the application process itself proved to be manageable. Dispensing the balm required some effort due to its thickness, ensuring no product wastage. Once applied, the balm distributed smoothly, instantly hydrating and maintaining moisture on the lips.

Personal Experience with Glossier Lip Balm

Applying the Glossier lip balm in the morning provides hydration that lasts until lunchtime. The lips feel moisturized and slightly sticky, with a noticeable tingling sensation that persists even after the balm is gone, which is surprisingly pleasant.

The absence of fragrance is a relief as it allows for drinking water without any aftertaste. However, once the balm wears off (which is not quick), the lips retain some hydration but lack the desired softness, although they remain comfortable without any tightness.

Despite not achieving the level of softness desired, there were no issues with flaking or dryness post-use. Overall, the experience of wearing Glossier lip balm leaves the lips feeling nourished and protected.

Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm Review

I’ve heard that some people have switched to the Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm with great reviews. It is available for £23 from Space NK UK or $24 from Sephora US, both are trusted retailers. Another popular option is Lanolips, which can be purchased for £8.99 from Cult Beauty UK or $12.99 from Target US. I have personally used both, and if I had to pick a favorite, it would be Summer Fridays without a doubt.

Customer Feedback on Glossier Products

Feedback from users regarding the reformulation of Glossier products has been mixed. While some customers are pleased that the original formula has been reinstated, others have found certain flavors to be less favorable.

One user expressed joy at the return to the original formula, stating, “can’t express how happy I am the original formula is back.” On the other hand, there have been complaints about specific flavors, with one individual noting that the strawberry variant was particularly disappointing.

Additionally, there have been reports of the formula separating over time, causing discomfort and dryness for some users. Despite these issues, recommendations have been made to store the lip balm in a cool, dark place to maintain its performance and consistency.

Final Verdict

If given the choice, I would definitely repurchase Glossier‘s Lip Butter Balm, although my preference leans towards the Summer Fridays variant. While the Balm Dotcom effectively moisturizes my lips, I do wish it had a smoother texture. Personally, I have no issues with the packaging or applicator, but individual preferences may vary.

For those who do not like balms with a glossy finish, appreciate a scent-free option, and seek a balm that provides a nourishing layer on the lips, Glossier could be the ideal choice for you.
