Identifying Forehead Zits: Is it Fungal Acne?
Understanding Fungal Acne: Expert Advice
Question: I’ve started breaking out on my forehead and I’m worried it’s fungal acne. How can I tell what type of acne it is?
Dr. Sonia explains:
Fungal acne is technically known as pityrosporum folliculitis (malassezia folliculitis), causing inflammation and infection in the hair follicles resulting in pimple-like bumps. While not very common, factors like heat, humidity (especially prevalent in summer), sweat, and excessive antibiotic use may contribute to its development.
If you suspect you have fungal acne
If you have “fungal acne,” you may notice that it is itchy, unlike typical acne. Fungal acne is characterized by small, skin-colored or pink bumps that are not inflamed or cystic. Common areas where fungal acne appears include the upper chest, upper to mid back, temples, sides of the face, hairline, and forehead.
Confirming a diagnosis
If you suspect the spots on your forehead are related to pityrosporum folliculitis (fungal acne), it’s essential to consult a doctor or dermatologist for a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
